Episode 76: Greyfriars Kirkyard

Greyfriars Kirkyard lies in the heart of Edinburgh, a centuries-old cemetery surrounded by the lively hustle and bustle of the city.

But the dead may not rest as peacefully as you’d think. Some visitors to the Covenanters' Prison allegedly have the misfortune of crossing paths with a violent, aggressive poltergeist said to lurk in the shadows of the notorious Black Mausoleum.

The entity is known as the Mackenzie poltergeist, named after the infamous George Mackenzie – dubbed 'Bluidy Mackenzie' – who was responsible for the persecution of thousands of covenanters.

With its rich and dark history, it’s no wonder Greyfriars Kirkyard is considered one of the most haunted cemeteries in the world.
